Early 19th century, from Odisha (Orissa), far eastern India, possibly Gond. These anklets show considerable wear and have a lovely worn patina commensurate with their age. Designed to be worn over the foot rather than around the ankle itself, they serve to lengthen the leg and draw attention to a graceful foot. Anklets such as these were often worn by dancers.
