Tar Heel Traveler: Church tobacco project Tar Heel traveler has been in the hot sun all week out on the farm Tonight we find Scott Mason in Western Wake County with a story of tobacco and a church and how the two are intertwined A church in Apex founded in 1850 and which in that time has turned over a much different leaf Well I think we got something to chop Sandy chop and hoe These roads are kind of short And the tobacco leaves kind of narrow They're smaller but stronger stronger yeah and thicker That's what I said They made camels and lucky strikes and palms out of That's very harsh high nicotine content but the leaf is totally different 15 and 1600 That's when this came and then this came this church Olive Chapel Baptist tobacco It's part of our heritage and as we celebrate 175 years we feel like you would have to understand our farming heritage to even understand who we are and our identity They are understanding it all right Gene It's Pepsi time tending ancient type tobacco in the blazing sun I think it's moon pie and Pepsi time Yes so you're growing the tobacco in Tandem with the church's 175th anniversary Yes that's correct We want to remember our agricultural heritage and our community here used to be made up of almost all farmers We were farmers but everybody had a little bit of the back everybody Where exactly are we This is all a chapel And so the name of the church the very first pastor they had Was a farmer Johnson He was the only one who could read or write He was a visionary but did he ever envision the withering of tobacco I think we're about done or the powerful pull of progress Apex has grown to our doorstep This used to be out in the middle of nowhere Anybody that went up and down the road I I would know who you were But instead of farmers it's developers who press on Well this used to be a tobacco barn I tore it down and made this little cabin out of it Well I guess you've kind of preserved its history yeah I guess history It has grown since we were here last The tobacco of the past just a little chew in the cheek It was just what they had in their mouth They didn't have chewing gum It was a wonderful life We want to remember it We want people to know that our roots grow very deep This farmer said Backer built this church That's part of our heritage Yep this is it and we need to tell the story
