In view of the much greater abundance of acrolein in cigarette smoke compared to benzo[ a ]pyrene (60 g versus 1.5-15 ng per cigarette [91]), the authors suggest that acrolein may represent ,a major etiological agent for cigarette smoke-related lung cancer [90]. This is a potentially important finding, because it opens avenues for decreasing the probability of cancer development in smokers by decreasing acrolein release from cigarettes through altering the amounts and composition of additives to cigarettes (see Section 2.2 and Hechts [91] commentary on the paper by Feng et al .)
